A good demonstration of the attitude people have towards government. People are bad, so we need a government made of people. (I took that last line from a business card for ancapfaq.com. It reads in a circle, so when you get back to “people”, it continues on to say “are bad so we need a government made of people are bad”…. etc.)
So the first frame, “move to another bully’s playground”. I hear people say this all the time, “you have a choice, move to another country”. Yea, and shop-keeps can move to a neighborhood controlled by a rival mafia family. And slaves can just move to another plantation, with different masters. There is nowhere to go, and that is why we fight so hard for America, because it started pretty libertarian, pretty free market. If there was an anarcho-capitalist society just over the border, you could say “move to a different playground”, but there isn’t. That decentralization of government, and of power, is exactly what I strive for, so that I can have the option to move somewhere else, and the competition will create better societies.
Living within the borders of a place controlled by force, where I was born, does not mean I consent to being governed, bullied, or enslaved. Again, there’s nowhere else to go. Just pick my bully? I don’t think so. I have the right to stay on the playground I was born on. That bully doesn’t own it just because he has carved out a little geographical area where no one can challenge his force, because he’s got the biggest muscles.
And obviously we cannot agree to disagree if that “agreement” includes the government taking half of the wealth I create each year, and using it at best wastefully, and at worst to keep me enslaved.
Every time someone tells me the worst possible outcome of an anarcho-capitalist society, it involves someone taking over and creating a government. Correct! We are living in the worst possible outcome for free people. And lets not pretend every government is like America’s (how sad that I must use American government as an example of relatively good government). We could just as easily wind up with the Russian, Venezuelan, or North Korean government.
The relatively free market here, and market pressure on politicians and government, is the only thing that makes this government tolerable. So get the unresponsive government out of the way, and we simply have the markets regulating how bad or good things get. Since even with these slave masters we have thus far managed to keep our lives not-so-bad, just imagine how great the market forces would make this geographical area if we didn’t have government obstructing us at every turn.
Thank you so much bullies, for making sure you’re the only one who will break my arm, shove my face in the dirt, and take my money!
